NAFDAC Bans Alcoholic Drinks In Small Sachets

The Federal Government of Nigeria through the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has announced it has begun enforcing the ban on the importation, manufacture, distribution, sale, and use of alcoholic beverages in sachets, PET, and glass bottles of 200 ml and below.

This was after Mojisola Adeyeye, Director-General of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), revealed this at a press conference in Abuja (FCT).

According to her, the deadline for manufacturers to cease production of the drinks in sachets and PET bottles, initially set for 2018, lapsed on January 31, 2024.

Adeyeye said the people most at risk of the negative effects of consuming the banned pack sizes of alcoholic beverages are underage and commercial vehicle drivers and riders.

The World Health Organisation, according to the NAFDAC boss, has established that children who drink alcohol are more likely to use drugs, get bad grades, suffer injury or death, engage in risky sexual activity, make bad decisions and have health problems.

The announcement has generated a lot of mixed feelings throughout the country, some opine that the enforcement is unnecessary,  while some believe it is a welcome idea which serves a great benefit to the health system of the country

Adeyeye, however, urged all holders of banned alcohol products and packaging materials to surrender them for destruction to avoid further consequences.
