Nigeria is set to achieve a significant milestone in its space exploration journey as the Federal Government announces plans to send the country’s first citizen into space.
The announcement was made by Mathew Adepoju, Director General of the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA), during a press conference held in Abuja on Wednesday.
Adepoju revealed that the Federal Government, in collaboration with NASRDA and the Space Exploration and Research Agency, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to facilitate this history endeavor. This collaboration marks a momentous occasion which coincidies with Nigeria’s 25th anniversary in space exploration, promising to unlock new avenues for scientific research and technological advancement.
Since its establishment in 1999, NASRDA has been at the forefront of Nigeria’s space exploration efforts, successfully launching several satellites into orbit, including the NigeriaSat-X in 2011. The decision to send a Nigerian citizen to space underscores the country’s growing capabilities and commitment to pushing the boundaries of space science.
“This initiative represents a leap forward in Nigeria’s quest to advance its technological prowess and contribute significantly to global space exploration efforts,” Adepoju stated during the press briefing.
The announcement has sparked enthusiasm and optimism within Nigeria’s scientific community and among space enthusiasts nationwide.
