Olufunke Ayotunde Akindele, popularly known as Funke Akindele or Jenifa, is a renowned Nigerian filmmaker, actress, director, producer, and even a politician. Born on August 24, 1977, in Ikorodu, Lagos State, Nigeria, she hails from a family of academic and educational background. Akindele is the second of three children, with her mother being a medical doctor and her father a retired school principal.
Her educational journey started at Grace Children’s School in Gbagada, Lagos State. She pursued Mass Communication, earning an Ordinary National Diploma (OND) from the former Ogun State Polytechnic, now known as Moshood Abiola Polytechnic. Later, she furthered her education, obtaining a Law degree from the University of Lagos, which showcased her versatility and intellectual abilities beyond the sphere of entertainment.
Akindele came into the limelight with her role as Bisi in the popular United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA)-sponsored sitcom “I Need to Know,” which aired from 1998 to 2002. Her breakthrough came in 2008 with the movie “Jenifa,” which solidified her status as a leading figure in the Nigerian entertainment industry.
However, her career hasn’t been without its share of controversies. In January 2018, speculations arose regarding her involvement in Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War. Although initially listed as a cast member on IMDb, her name was replaced with fellow Nigerian actress Genevieve Nnaji, with Funke Akindele’s inclusion proven to be a hack.
Away from entertainment, Akindele delved into politics in 2023, accepting a nomination as the Lagos deputy governorship candidate under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2023 elections. This move, justified by Abdul-Azeez Olajide Adediran, known as Jandor, aimed to solidify Akindele’s influence and appeal to enhance his candidacy. In accepting the nomination, Akindele acknowledged there would be a temporary halt in her acting career.
Funke has recieved several awards as a succesful actress and thespian including the Best Actress in a Comedy at the 2016 and 2017 Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards. She won the same award in 2020 and 2022, making it her fifth win for the Best Actress in a Comedy category. She has also been nominated for countless achievements and awards which is a huge testament to her stellar career as an actress.
Moreover, Akindele’s social media influence is a force to reckon with. She boasts of 4.7 million followers on TikTok and 16.6 million on Instagram, as she continues to captivate her audiences worldwide through those platforms.
