In Focus: How Naija artistes fared at the 65th Grammys

Nigeria is one country that is gifted with talented entertainers who can and have been holding their forte in the National and International space. This has been evident in how they rank among the top 3 African countries with the most Grammy Awards.

The Grammys Awards is undoubtedly one of the biggest award ceremonies in the world. It is one of the four major annual American entertainment awards. The 65th edition was held this weekend in Los Angeles.

Although records were broken by various people at the 2023 Grammys Award including Beyonce who makes history as artiste with the most Grammy wins, Nigerians felt elated when TEMILADE OPENIYI popularly known by her stage name “Tems” broke a record by becoming the first female Nigerian artiste to win a Grammy award. She won the ‘Best Melodic Rap Performance’ category for her role in ‘Wait for U’, the 2022 hit song by Future featuring Drake.

Damini Ebunoluwa Ogulu professionally known as Burna boy won the Best Global Music Album For ‘Twice As Tall’ at the 2021 Grammys and was again nominated in two categories this year but was unfortunately not able to clinch any of the awards this year.

Overall, a total of 16 Nigerian artists have been nominated at the Grammy Awards Ceremony for their original work, and only Burna boy has managed to win the Grammy for his Original work – “Twice As Tall”. Out of the 11 Nigerian Artists who received Grammy nominations as featured artists, three of them, including, Michael Babatunde Olatunji, Wizkid, and recently Tems won.
