Football: Chelsea surrender two top spots in one week

After getting pegged back twice by Westham just over the weekend, and ultimately losing that encounter on the stroke of fulltime, Chelsea turned their focus to their UCL final group match aginst the reigning Champions of Russia, Zenith St Petersburg. Although the encounter looked easy on paper for the blues, they still went on to share the spoils in a 3 all draw at the Gazprom Stadium in Russia.

No doubt Tuchel has managed to string beautiful results together since he took over from Frank Lampard after he got the sack, the German most importantly went on to win the highly coveted Uefa Champions League trophy_against all odds. He has overtime ensured that this Chelsea engine is well oiled and they’ve grown to become a formidable side in recent times. Need I say that they also have been very stingy with letting in goals from opposition sides. However, after shipping six (6) in two outings, losing both the EPL top spot and that of Group H in the UCL, prying eyes are now beginning to find faults with this team.

Prior to last night, Chelsea have only conceded a goal, and that was against Juventus, but shipping 3 against a side many won’t give a fighting chance, and coming on the back of another 3 let in over the weekend, it appears things are not coming up well in the blues’ camp, and it’s hard to piece together what exactly is going on.

Well, yeah a number of injuries to key players might have played a part in some of these recent shambolic displays, but conceding two late goals in two crucial games doesn’t speak highly of a team of Chelsea’s pedigree.

The question now is will Chelsea survive this long unforgiving December fixtures? Well, they take on Leeds up next in their EPL duties, and if Tuchel and his wards intend to keep any hopes whatsoever alive, they must start by convincingly dispatching Marcelo Biesla’s side on Saturday.
