The match started with a frenzy as Chelsea’s Conor Gallagher scored in the first minute, setting a record as the fastest goal ever scored by an Englishman in the competition. Atletico Madrid maintained the scoreline and won the game 1-0 on the night, bringing the overall score level at 2-2 after extra time.
Madrid’s Vinicius Junior had a chance to score from the penalty spot during normal time but sent his shot high over the bar.
With neither team able to find a winner, the match went to a penalty shootout. Real Madrid held their nerve, while Atletico missed two of their spot-kicks.
