A professor of Physical Chemistry at the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), Matthew Ayorinde, has been honored with the NAS Gold Medal by the Nigerian Academy of Science (NAS).
This was announced on Monday in a statement by Sonny Kuku and Oladoyin Okubanjo, who are the chairman and executive secretary of the NAS Science Prize Committee.
The NAS Gold Medal is a special award created in 2016 to celebrate Nigerian scientists who have achieved great things in science, both in the country and globally. The prize is given every year, switching between Life Sciences and Physical Sciences.
For 2024, the focus is on Physical Sciences, and the award comes with a medal, a certificate, and a cash prize.
Professor Ayorinde is a skilled researcher in material science, water treatment, corrosion technology, and environmental chemistry. His work focuses on cleaning water using methods like adsorption, coagulation, and photodegradation.
He develops affordable, eco-friendly materials to remove harmful dyes from water. These materials have proven effective in cleaning both test samples and real wastewater.
