The Super Eagles of Nigeria have been stranded at Abraq International Airport in Libya, just two days before their Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against the Mediterranean Knights.
The Nigerian football team left Uyo on Sunday morning, heading for Libya. However, things didn’t go as planned when their flight, which was supposed to land in Benghazi, was diverted mid-flight to Abraq Airport, which is much farther to the location of the match stadium.
Sports journalist Tobi Adepoju revealed that the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) had secured approval for the flight to land close to the Benina Stadium in Benghazi, where the match is set to take place. Unfortunately, the last-minute diversion has left the team stuck at Abraq Airport, with the gates locked and no way to leave.
A video showing the team waiting at the airport has gone viral, while another clip from NFF TV shows Nigerian officials trying to negotiate with airport authorities.
