The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has decided that Libya’s national football team will lose three points to Nigeria’s Super Eagles. CAF also fined Libya’s football federation because of the issues Nigeria’s team faced when trying to reach their African Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier in Benghazi, Libya.
The match was planned for Tuesday, October 15, but the Nigerian team’s flight from Kano was unexpectedly redirected to Al-Abraq Airport, instead of going directly to Benghazi. This surprise change left the Nigerian players and staff stranded at the airport for more than 12 hours without clear information.
After reviewing the situation, CAF’s Disciplinary Board found that Libya had broken important rules in the AFCON Regulations and the CAF Disciplinary Code. Because of these rule violations, CAF ruled the match as forfeited by Libya and awarded Nigeria a 3-0 win.
Libya’s Football Federation must also pay a $50,000 fine within 60 days. With this decision, Nigeria now leads Group D with 10 points from four games, giving them a better chance of qualifying for AFCON.
CAF stated that this ruling reinforces its commitment to fair play and good sportsmanship in all AFCON games.
