Action-Packed but Shallow: A Review of The Killer’s Game

“The Killer’s Game” is a film that takes the familiar action-thriller template and attempts to give it a unique spin with its premise. Directed by J.J. Perry and starring Dave Bautista, the movie is based on the 1997 novel by Jay Bonansinga. Bautista plays Joe Flood, a hitman diagnosed with a terminal illness who decides to put a hit on himself, only to find out he still has reasons to live when his ex-girlfriend (Sofia Boutella) becomes a target as well.

While the premise sounds interesting—assassins hunting their own employer—the film falls short of delivering something truly memorable. Bautista brings his usual tough-guy charisma to the role, but the movie’s emotional beats feel underdeveloped. The tension between the action sequences and the internal struggle of Joe Flood to find a reason to keep fighting is not as gripping as it could have been.

The action, however, is well-executed, thanks to Perry’s direction, with thrilling sequences that keep the audience engaged. The film’s pacing is fast and relentless, which can be both a strength and a weakness. It moves so quickly that there’s little room for character development or deeper emotional connection. Sofia Boutella’s character also feels somewhat sidelined, despite her being central to Flood’s motivations.

Ultimately, The Killer’s Game delivers an entertaining but somewhat forgettable experience. It’s the kind of movie you can watch with low expectations and enjoy the action, but don’t expect much more than a surface-level ride. It may find more appreciation among viewers looking for an easy-to-watch action flick rather than a profound narrative.
