On Tuesday, September 17, Georgian lawmakers has approved a new law that brings about strict limits on LGBT rights.
The bill gives the government the power to ban Pride events, prevent the display of the rainbow flag, and censor certain films and books. It also continues the implementation of an existing ban on same gender marriage and outlaws gender reassignment surgery.
Supporters of the ruling Georgian Dream party argue that the law is necessary to protect traditional values, especially in a country where the Orthodox Church holds significant influence. The bill was passed with 84 out of 150 lawmakers voting in favor.
