One Dead, Eight Injured in Third Mainland Bridge Collision

 

A fatal accident occurred on Lagos’ Third Mainland Bridge on Monday, leaving one person dead and eight others severely injured. The incident involved two Mazda commercial buses that collided head-on near the Ilaje area of the bridge, sparking concerns over reckless driving and road safety.

According to a statement from the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the buses, with number plates LND 624 YE and EKY 804 YH, were reportedly involved in a high-speed chase from Adeniji Adele. The crash resulted in severe injuries to eight passengers, all of whom were rushed to Gbagada General Hospital by the Lagos State Ambulance Services (LASAMBUS).

LASTMA’s Director of Public Affairs, Adebayo Taofiq, noted that the reckless driving of the bus drivers led to the tragic accident, which also serves as a grim reminder of the dangers posed by irresponsible driving practices. “This incident highlights the catastrophic consequences of speeding and dangerous driving on Lagos roads,” Taofiq remarked.

The rapid response by LASTMA officials, in collaboration with police units from Bariga and Alonge stations, ensured the swift rescue of the injured and restored order on the busy bridge. The police provided critical security during the rescue operations, while efforts were made to clear the accident scene and resume the flow of traffic.

In a related development, another accident occurred later that day involving a Honda CRV, which overturned near the University of Lagos’ waterfront. LASTMA attributed this accident to excessive speeding. Fortunately, no casualties were reported, and officials quickly removed the wreckage to prevent further traffic disruption.

LASTMA extended its condolences to the family of the deceased and expressed hopes for the swift recovery of those injured. The agency also reiterated its commitment to improving road safety across the state, urging motorists to adhere to traffic regulations and drive with caution to avoid similar tragedies.

This latest accident adds to the growing concerns over road safety in Lagos, particularly on major highways like the Third Mainland Bridge, which sees heavy traffic daily. Authorities continue to encourage drivers to prioritize safety and observe speed limits to prevent further loss of life on the city’s roads.
