Russian Embassy Responds to Use of Russian Flags by Nigerian Protesters

The Russian Embassy in Nigeria has responded to reports of protesters in northern Nigeria carrying Russian flags. The protests on August 5, saw  people marching on the streets with Russian flags and chanting slogans. Some protesters also held placards with various messages.

In an official statement, the embassy clarified that neither the Russian government nor its officials are involved in or coordinating these protests.

The statement emphasised that Russia does not interfere in the domestic affairs of anoother countries, including Nigeria. The embassy further clarified that the choice to carry Russian flags was made by individual protesters and does not represent any official policy of the Russian government.

The embassy also showed respect for Nigerian democracy, that peaceful demonstrations within Nigerian law are a democratic expression. However, condemning any acts of violence that might arise from the protests
