Elon Musk announced on Tuesday his decision to relocate the headquarters of SpaceX and X, formerly known as Twitter, to Texas in response to a new California law that prohibits schools from requiring teachers to inform parents about changes to a student’s gender identity.
“This is the final straw. Because of this law and the many others that preceded it, attacking both families and companies, SpaceX will now move its HQ from Hawthorne, California, to Starbase, Texas,” Musk stated on X.
In addition to moving SpaceX, Musk revealed plans to transfer X’s headquarters from its art-deco location in San Francisco to Austin. While he has previously threatened to make this move, it has not been actualized until now.
This decision follows Musk’s earlier relocation of Tesla’s headquarters from Palo Alto in Silicon Valley to Austin, Texas.
“I did make it clear to Governor Newsom about a year ago that laws of this nature would force families and companies to leave California to protect their children,” Musk wrote.
Musk has frequently criticized the use of preferred pronouns, often mocking the practice on social media and dismissing it as part of a “woke” agenda that he considers dangerous for society.
The controversial California bill, signed by Governor Gavin Newsom on Monday, followed a heated legislative process that saw a clash between school boards advocating for parental rights and LGBTQ activists concerned about the welfare of vulnerable students.
