Ranked: The Best Universities In Nigeria [2024]

British Magazine, Times Higher Education (THE) has released the 2024 edition of its Nigerian best universities rankings, which this year rates over 35 Nigerian universities.

The British magazine said it used “carefully calibrated indicators” to provide comprehensive and balanced comparisons across three vital areas: teaching, research, and societal impact.

So, here are the rankings of the Best Universities in Nigeria [2024]

1. COVENANT UNIVERSITY


Covenant University has been ranked the best university in Nigeria in 2024, by the Times Higher Education.
It is a private Christian university in Ota, Ogun State, Nigeria, and is affiliated with Living Faith Church Worldwide and a member of the Association of Commonwealth Universities, Association of African Universities, and National Universities Commission. In 2019, Covenant University became the first Nigerian university to be ranked in the top 401-500 category of world universities by Times Higher Education.

2. UNIVERSITY OF IBADAN


The University of Ibadan (UI) is a public research university, located in Ibadan, Nigeria. The university was once a college of the University of London. The college was established in 1948 as University College Ibadan, one of many colleges within the University of London. It became an independent university in 1962 and is the oldest degree-awarding institution in Nigeria. Through its graduate network, the University of Ibadan has contributed to the political, industrial, economic and cultural development of Nigeria. And is now ranked the second best university in Nigeria in 2024.

3. FEDERAL UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY, AKURE

The Federal University of Technology Akure [FUTA] is a federal government-owned university located in Akure, Ondo State, Nigeria. It was founded in 1981 driven by the federal government of Nigeria to create universities that specialized in producing graduates with practical as well as theoretical knowledge of technologies.
The mission of FUTA is to promote technological advancement by providing conducive environment for research, teaching and learning engenders development of products that are technologically oriented, self-reliant and relevant to society. The University is ranked the third best university in the country.

4. UNIVERSITY OF LAGOS

The University of Lagos, popularly known as UNILAG, is a public research university located in Lagos, Nigeria and was founded in 1962. UNILAG is one of the first generation universities in Nigeria and is ranked among the top universities in the country in major education publications.

The University of Lagos has, for over 5 decades, provided qualitative and research-oriented education to Nigerians and all those who have entered its domain in search of knowledge. The University has built a legacy of excellence and has been instrumental in the production of top range graduates and academia who have had tremendous impact, directly or indirectly, on growth and development in Nigeria. It is now ranked the fourth, in the 2024 Nigeria’s best universities rankings.

5. BAYERO UNIVERSITY


The Bayero University Kano (BUK) is a university situated in Kano, Kano State, Nigeria. It was founded in 1975, when it was renamed from Bayero University College and upgraded from University College to University. It is the first university in Kano State, North-western Nigeria.

The university offers cheap tuition making it very affordable. Bayero University takes a large geography and student body. The student population is relatively diverse though mostly by students from northern Nigeria. The university offers degree programs in agriculture, science, arts, social sciences, engineering etc.
It is ranked the fifth best university in Nigeria.
