On Sunday night, President Joe Biden issued a full and unconditional pardon to his son, Hunter Biden, which spares him from possible prison time for federal gun and tax crimes.

This decision ends a long legal battle for Hunter and reverses Biden’s earlier promise not to use his office to benefit his family.

Hunter Biden, who has faced federal investigations since 2020, was convicted earlier this year and could have received a lengthy prison sentence. He was due to appear in court soon in California.

In a public statement, President Biden admitted that the decision was difficult but necessary. He argued that his son was unfairly targeted because of their family connection. “I believe in the justice system, but politics infected this process, leading to a miscarriage of justice,” Biden said.

The president also addressed concerns about breaking his past promises, stating, “From the day I took office, I said I would not interfere with the Justice Department’s decisions. I kept that promise, even as I watched my son face unfair treatment.”
