The Enugu State government has started a new tax for corpses kept in mortuaries. This tax is not meant to generate revenue, but to stop people from leaving their loved ones in mortuaries for too long.
The Enugu State Internal Revenue Service (ESIRS) said this tax follows the state’s Births, Deaths and Burials Law. If a body is not buried within 24 hours, the mortuary must pay N40 every day it stays longer.
The tax keeps adding up for each extra day. Mortuary owners must pay this amount to the government before they can release the body for burial. The money is paid into the Enugu State IGR account.
