The Nigerian Army announced the deployment of 177 personnel to Guinea-Bissau for a peacekeeping mission under the ECOWAS Stabilisation Support Mission.
The announcement was made by Major General Boniface Sinjen, Chief of Operations, Nigerian Army, during the graduation ceremony of the troops at the Martin Luther Agwai International Leadership and Peacekeeping Centre in Jaji, Kaduna State.
Major General Sinjen emphasised on the political instability and crises in Guinea-Bissau, which has posed significant threats to peace and sustainable development in the sub-region. He emphasized that the Nigerian government’s commitment, through ECOWAS, to support the government and people of Guinea-Bissau.
Earlier, the Commandant of the Leadership and Peacekeeping Centre, Major General Ademola Adedoja, remarked that the Pre-Deployment Training, which began on May 19, was designed to prepare the contingent for contemporary peacekeeping operations. The troops were exposed to lectures on the specific security challenges facing Guinea-Bissau, ensuring they are well-prepared for a successful tour of duty.
