On this day in 1992, the Nigerian movie industry, popularly known as Nollywood, was born with the release of the film “Living in Bondage” . This movie changed the way films were made in Nigeria and led to the rise of one of the biggest film industries in the world.
Before Living in Bondage, Nigerian movies were mostly shot on expensive film reels, making production costly. However, a businessman and filmmaker, Kenneth Nnebue, came up with a new idea, using VHS tapes to record movies. He wrote and produced Living in Bondage, a story about greed, rituals, and redemption.
The movie was released directly on home video, and it became a massive success.
The success of Living in Bondage proved that Nigerians loved watching local stories told in their own way. Many filmmakers followed this new style of low-budget but very engaging storytelling. Within a few years, Nollywood became Africa’s largest film industry and the second-largest in the world after Bollywood, producing thousands of films every year.
This movie started a revolution in Nigerian entertainment. Today, Nollywood movies are watched all over the world, and Nigerian actors and directors have gained international recognition. The industry has also created jobs for millions of people, from actors to scriptwriters and producers.
