Kofoworola Odozi MTN Nigeria has begun implementing a 50% increase in data tariffs following approval from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) in January. While call and SMS rates remain unchanged, various data plans now reflect higher costs.
For instance, the 1.5GB monthly plan, previously N1,000, now offers 1.8GB for N1,500. The 15GB bundle has jumped from N4,500 to N6,500, while the 20GB plan now costs N7,500 instead of N5,500. Larger bundles have seen even steeper increases, with the 1.5 terabyte 90-day plan rising from N150,000 to N240,000.
The NCC justified the price hike by citing rising operational expenses and the need for long-term sustainability in the telecom sector. However, the National Association of Telecommunications Subscribers (NATCOMS) has opposed the move, calling for a reduction to 10% and threatening legal action.
As the new pricing takes effect, customers are urged to check updated tariff plans before purchasing data bundles.
