Ghana’s opposition leader, John Mahama, has officially won the presidential election held on Saturday. The Electoral Commission announced on Monday that Mahama secured 56% of the votes, defeating the ruling party’s candidate and Vice President, Mahamudu Bawumia, who received 41%.
This victory marks a comeback for Mahama, who was Ghana’s president from 2012 to 2017. His win ends the eight-year rule of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) under President Nana Akufo-Addo.
Many voters blamed the government for the country’s economic problems, including high living costs and a debt crisis. President Akufo-Addo’s last term was marked by severe economic struggles, forcing Ghana to seek help from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and deal with a debt default.
