Senegal has decided to part ways with Aliou Cisse, the coach who guided them to their historic Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) win in 2022 and led the team through the last two World Cup tournaments.
The decision was driven by Senegal’s sports minister, Khady Diene Gaye, following a government request not to extend Cisse’s contract, according to the country’s football association.
Cisse, who was a former captain of Senegal’s national team and a player for Paris Saint-Germain, took over as coach in 2015. Under his leadership, Senegal won their first-ever AFCON title two years ago. He also led the team to the last 16 of the 2022 World Cup.
However, Senegal’s performance in this year’s AFCON ended at the same stage, as they were knocked out by hosts and eventual champions, Ivory Coast.
