Minor Fire Incident at Dangote Refinery Swiftly Contained

 

Lagos, June 26, 2024 — A minor fire incident at the Dangote Refinery in Lagos on Wednesday has been swiftly contained, according to a statement by the Dangote Group. The fire broke out around noon in the effluent treatment plant of the refinery, causing temporary alarm in the surrounding area.

Witnesses reported seeing large plumes of smoke and hearing loud noises from the direction of the refinery. Video footage shared on social media showed thick black smoke rising from the affected part of the complex. Despite the dramatic visuals, the Dangote Group has reassured the public that the situation was quickly brought under control.

“Dangote Refinery contains minor fire at its effluent treatment plant,” read the statement. “We have swiftly contained a minor fire incident at our effluent treatment plant (ETP). There is no cause for alarm as the refinery is operating, and there is no recorded injury or body harm to all our staff on duty.”

At the time of the incident, emergency responders from the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) had not yet arrived on the scene. However, engineers and on-site personnel managed the situation effectively, preventing the fire from spreading to other parts of the complex.

The Dangote Refinery, located in the Lekki Free Zone near Lagos, is a key player in Nigeria’s oil industry. Owned by the Dangote Group, it is the largest single-train refinery in the world, with a capacity to process 650,000 barrels per day (BPD). The refinery began operations last year and has since been an essential component of Nigeria’s oil refining capabilities.

Further investigations are underway to determine the exact cause of the fire and to evaluate any potential impact on refinery operations. The Dangote Group’s swift response and containment of the fire highlight the safety protocols and preparedness measures in place at the facility.
