Ten years ago, on June 26, 2014, Uruguayan striker Luis Suarez faced severe punishments after being found guilty of ‘biting’ Italian defender Giorgio Chiellini during a World Cup match. FIFA handed Suarez a nine-match suspension and a fine of 100,000 Swiss francs ($111,000).
The incident occurred late in the game, with television footage capturing Suarez’s mouth making contact with Chiellini’s shoulder. This act drew widespread outrage from football fans globally, who demanded strict action from FIFA to prevent such behavior from reoccurring.
Despite the controversy, Uruguay secured a 1-0 victory in the match, advancing to the knockout stage of the tournament. However, Suarez, considered one of the world’s top forwards, was barred from participating in the rest of the World Cup. Claudio Sulser, chairman of the FIFA Disciplinary Committee, emphasized the severity of Suarez’s actions, stating, “Such behavior cannot be tolerated on any football pitch, and in particular not at a FIFA World Cup when the eyes of millions of people are on the stars on the field.”
