The National Film Authority (NFA) in Ghana is speaking out against TV stations that are showing movies and other creative content without permission.
In a recent statement, the NFA said this trend is becoming a serious problem. It’s not just unfair to the creators — it’s also illegal and harmful to Ghana’s film and entertainment industry.
According to the NFA, many local and foreign filmmakers have complained that their movies and shows are being aired by both regular and digital TV channels across the country without proper approval.
Kafui Danku Pitcher, the Executive Secretary of the NFA, stressed that this is a direct violation of the Copyright Act, 2005 (Act 690). She made it clear that no one should use a creator’s work on air unless they’ve been given permission first. TV stations that break this rule could face legal action, including losing their licenses.
The NFA says it’s teaming up with other authorities to investigate and punish offenders. It also urged all TV stations to play by the rules — buy the proper licenses, pay content owners fairly, and classify all films before showing them.
By respecting intellectual property rights, the NFA believes the creative industry in Ghana can grow stronger and attract more investment.
