Thousands of app-based transport drivers in Lagos are preparing to down tools on May 1, 2025, in a 24-hour strike aimed at pressuring major ride-hailing companies such as Uber, Bolt, Lagride, inDrive, and Rida.
The planned protest, which is being coordinated by the Amalgamated Union of App-Based Transporters of Nigeria (AUATON), is expected to see approximately 5,000 drivers go offline in a unified call for improved pay and working conditions.
In a statement released on Tuesday, April 22, the union expressed frustration over what it described as the persistent disregard of drivers’ welfare by the ride-hailing platforms.
“We’ve made repeated attempts to engage these companies in meaningful discussions,” the union said. “Yet, they continue to place profits above people, neglecting our calls for just compensation, better safety measures, and the recognition of our rights as workers.”
The strike is expected to affect ride-hailing services across Lagos, potentially disrupting mobility for commuters on the public holiday.
