The Lagos State House of Assembly has announced that it will determine the next course of action regarding allegations of misconduct and financial impropriety against former Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, upon his return.
Speaking in an interview at the Assembly complex in Alausa, Ikeja, on Monday, House spokesperson Olukayode Ogundipe stated that the Assembly would address the allegations once Obasa is physically present. He emphasized that any further steps, including a possible probe, would be in line with the Assembly’s procedures.
Allegations and Possible InvestigationOgundipe acknowledged that there have been various allegations concerning financial misconduct by Obasa. However, he clarified that the Assembly would only take action after directly engaging with him.
“On the other allegations against him, when he is physically present, those matters will be addressed. There have been claims about different sums of money being spent by him, but we need to verify these records. Once he is back, appropriate actions will be taken,” Ogundipe said.
When asked whether the Assembly would involve the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in the investigation, he stated that such a decision would be made once Obasa returns. “A committee may be set up to look into it, or the leadership of the House may handle it. The formal procedures will be followed to the letter,” he added.
Obasa’s Removal Was LawfulAddressing claims that Obasa’s removal as Speaker was unlawful, Ogundipe reaffirmed that the process followed constitutional guidelines.
“The former Speaker, Rt Hon Mudashiru Obasa, remains one of us, and the process of his removal was constitutional. The same procedure used to appoint him was used for his removal,” he explained.
Obasa’s impeachment has been a significant topic of political discourse in Lagos, with various stakeholders debating its implications. As the former Speaker prepares to return, the Assembly’s response will likely shape the next phase of this unfolding political development.
